Before leading the Angelus at the New York Catholic Bible Summit, Cardinal Dolan acknowledged the allegiance to the faith of the 500 in attendance. “To see—thanks be to God—a crowd like this on a Saturday summer afternoon who are so interested in God’s Holy Word in the Bible, thanks be to God,” the cardinal said to those gathered in the gymnasium of Cathedral High School, 350 E. 56 St. in Manhattan, June 20, 2015. SCOTTSDALE — The National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd opened its national office Aug 24 at the parish life center located at Our Lady of Perpetual Church in Scottsdale. For more than 60 years, children have been nurtured in their relationship with God through the prayerful encounters they experience through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Read more here.

LINCOLN - Parishes who are interested in offering an effective religious education programs for preschoolers and kindergarteners may be interested in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Training for instructors will be offered this summer at the parish hall of St. Leo Church in Palmyra.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd began in 1954, when a Montessori instructor named Sofia Cavaletti was asked to develop a religious education program for young children. With her coworker Gianni Gobbi, the pair spent a number of years developing an intuitive approach to guiding children to understand Christ and their relationship with Him. Read more here.

Few catechists in this country could have predicted the popularity of a religious education movement called the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. “In 1985, I sent a personal Christmas card to everyone in the United States who was involved in C.G.S.,” Tina Lillig, director of the National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, told me. “I think I needed 23 stamps. Last month we sent out our annual mailing to 1,400 association members, and we estimate that there are an additional 900 or so people who are actively working in C.G.S.” As national director for 13 years, Lillig has seen interest steadily grow and spread, but nothing prepared her for the present. “Now we are receiving inquiries from dioceses as far away as the Philippines, Tanzania and Pakistan,” she says. “Suddenly it is something of a wildfire.” Read more here.
