In support of this mission, The Director of Youth Faith Formation oversees the religious formation of the children in the parish and supports parish family life informed by our identity and values as a Jesuit parish in the City of St. Louis. This position is full-time with health benefits.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1.     Lead and manage all aspects of the Religious Education program at the College Church, including recruitment and retention of families and children, recruitment and retention of an all-volunteer teaching team, staffing, curriculum design and development, training and on-going teacher support and formation. (50% of Position)  


          This includes:

·      Weekly Sunday Religious Education classes for children from pre-school through eighth grade; 

·      The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atria Program for children from pre-school through sixth grade; 

·      Weekly Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Liturgy;

·      The Children’s Nursery during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Liturgy;

·      A vibrant Youth Ministry program for Eighth Grade and High School students;

·      On-going and consistent digital, print, and personal communication with RE Parents and Families.


2.    In collaboration with the Pastor and the Director of Liturgy, lead and manage all sacramental preparation and special liturgies for the College Church RE Program (20% of Position)


            This includes:

·   All sacramental preparation including designing and managing the liturgies and celebrations for First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation;

·   All special family liturgies including the Christmas Eve Family Mass, the Christmas Eve Tableau, Easter Sunday 10:30 Liturgy; and the RE Closing Mass / May Crowning. 

·     Lead RCIC instruction for children in preparation for Baptism.


3.    Plan, manage and help staff all Service opportunities for students and families to live out Gospel values (15% of position).


4.    In collaboration with the Youth Faith Commission, provide administrative support and consultation for RE Family Life programs, special events, and initiatives (10% of Position). 

            This includes:

·     Developing and supporting the Youth Faith Commission;

·     Supporting the RE Family Mass and Picnic;

·     Supporting the RE Pancake Breakfast;

·     Guiding, collaborating, and supporting efforts to provide on-going formation and faith development for parents and families.


5.    Continue to explore opportunities to further integrate the RE and Atria children, parents, and families into the broader life of the parish (5% of Position).

Critical Skills and Expertise:

·     An understanding and/or appreciation of Ignatian spirituality and Catechesis of the Good Shephard and an eagerness to deliver Catholic Religious Education within the context of the St. Francis Xavier College Church environment.

·     Demonstrated outstanding project and program management skills in a complex environment;

·     Experience with recruiting, training and managing teams with a particular focus on managing teams of volunteers;

·     Outstanding communication and relationship-building skills;

·     Highly self-directed; excellent problem-solving skills; creative, flexible, dynamic.

·     Experience with and a love of working with and on behalf of children.

Required Experience and Education:

·      A minimum of 3-5 years of demonstrated project or program management experience in a parish, religious, educational; non-profit, or for-profit setting;

Purpose and Scope:
To support the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix and its mission to help all persons encounter the living Christ, through the Office of Natural Family Planning, this position directs the instruction, support and promotion of Natural Family Planning (NFP), chastity education and related marriage and family life issues.
Essential Job Functions:
·         Coordinate NFP focus and programs. Maintain an office that teaches only certified methods of NFP and stays within established USCCB guidelines. Establish criteria for recruitment, screening and training of potential instructors in NFP and chastity education in English and Spanish and other needed languages to ensure program philosophy and standards are both understood and upheld.
·         Coordinate instructor certification, evaluation, formation, and in-service training to maintain quality of instruction.
·         Coordinate master schedule of all NFP classes, locations and instructors.
·         Supervise Office of NFP staff, including staff evaluation and development in consultation with the Director, Marriage and Respect Life.
·         Promote NFP services through advertising, contacts, newsletters, website articles, speaking engagements, and workshops.
·         Acts as Bishop Olmsted’s liaison to affiliated leadership and research groups (i.e. medical professionals, etc.).
·         Establish and maintain effective communications between the Office of NFP and appropriate people and organizations within the Diocese of Phoenix.
·         Supervise and coordinate the teaching activities of the diocesan NFP instructors in other NFP methodologies.
·         Develop and maintain a budget for the Office.
·         Coordinate maintenance of statistical information for evaluation of the program’s growth and overall effectiveness. Provide necessary reports reflecting program activity, development and effectiveness when required.
·         Oversee the work of Catholic Academy for Life Leadership.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
·         Ability to keep abreast of NFP trends and incorporate, new information while maintaining the program’s values and philosophy.
·         Ability to work under pressure, take initiative, be creative and anticipate solutions to problems; need good judgment in emergency situations and when working with varied personalities and cultures; must be able to work with frequent interruptions.
·         Basic knowledge and skills in planning, organizing, communicating, administering, managing and training staff and volunteers effectively.
·         Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
·         Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
·         Excellent communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
·         BA degree in Science or Theology.
·         Instructor in one accepted method of NFP.
·         Three years working experience in a similar position.

The position collaborates with diocesan agencies in providing formation for lay leaders and/or fostering missionary discipleship; it also collaborates with various lay apostolates and curial agencies involved in evangelization.


* Serves as a member of the Bishop’s Curia Council

* Supervises both the Director of Religious Education and the Superintendent of Catholic Schools

* Oversees the budgets for the Secretariat of Evangelization and Catechesis

* Engages in creative thinking, on an ongoing basis, regarding best practices for evangelizing and building discipleship, and communicates this thinking to others in the diocese

* Facilitates collaboration in the areas of evangelization and catechesis within the Secretariat of Evangelization & Catechesis and with the agencies of the Secretariat of Pastoral Concerns

* Keeps abreast of theological developments in areas associated with evangelization and catechesis through review of relevant publications, as well as attendance at national conferences

* Curates and disseminates a monthly newsletter for parish leaders


* Provides leadership in these areas:

o Professional and volunteer lay ministry development

o Personal Christian formation

o General missionary discipleship among the faithful

* Identifies, encourages and facilitates the formation of potential new lay leaders, both professional and volunteer

* Works with the diocesan Bishop, agency directors, pastors, deacons and lay parish leaders to promote the holistic formation of lay leaders—addressing their human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral needs

* Develops formation opportunities in response to important developments from the Holy See and/or the USCCB

* Supports efforts organized by the various curial agencies to provide for the ongoing formation of both professional and volunteer lay personnel; provides this service directly when no curial office is able to do so

* Serves as the liaison for the Newman Institute’s collaborative efforts with local Catholic universities (e.g., CTU’s Romero Scholars Program), local and national lay apostolates and neighboring dioceses (e.g., the Archdiocese’s Lay Leadership Program)

* Facilitates ongoing formation both for agency directors through periodic “featured topics” and for the entire curia through monthly “conversations for mission”

* Serves as diocesan leader for the partnership with the University of Notre Dame’s Echo Program

* Supervises the work of the office’s administrative assistant

* Keeps abreast of current trends and best practices in lay formation and lay ministry

* Designs and oversees the budget to support the work of the office

* Assumes additional duties as assigned


A Master’s degree (Doctorate preferred) in theology, education, pastoral ministry or related field expected, with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in directing and managing pastoral ministry required. A mission-driven understanding of Catholic education and the Church’s vision for lifelong faith formation as well as knowledge of parish and diocesan life required. A commitment to the Church’s vision of missionary discipleship. Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church. Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills are required along with good computer skills. Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus.

TRAVEL: Approximately 10-15%. Occasional overnight.
