Episode 60 – Pioneers of CGS with Betty Hissong

“I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land.” Ezekiel 36:24

Betty Hissong has been a Montessori teacher, having started the second Montessori school in the United States in the mid-1960s, a Montessori teacher-trainer, a Good Shepherd catechist, and a formation leader for more than 40 years. She is in Cleveland, Ohio. Now, at almost 95 years old she may be the oldest CGS catechist and formation leader. She shares some of her stories about her early years in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

Spring Catechist Study Day

Gather with fellow catechists to explore the presentation of the Empty Tomb, the Resurrection Narratives, and the Pentecost Celebration.  We will also discuss some practical end of the year procedures. Join us on Zoom on Tuesday, April 19th, from 8-9 ET as we enter into the joy of the resurrection.  This formation day is designed for those members of CGSUSA who have completed a CGSUSA sponsored Catechists Formation (at least Level One Formation) or are currently participating in a CGSUSA sponsored formation course.  Space in limited so register online

Our Vendor Organization Members are organizations, companies, or individuals who create and sell goods that support catechists in preparing Atrium materials for children.  They go through an approval process and are formally recognized as vendors our members can trust.

Materials offered for sale by Vendor Members must follow the guidelines for materials identified by the International Council (Consiglio) in the “Characteristics of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and must sell products that are safe under the regulations of the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission. Vendor Members of CGSUSA are an important part of our CGSUSA members’ ministry with children.  CGSUSA strives to build connections between our catechist members and our vendor members.

We are grateful to Catechist Husband, a Benefactor Vendor member, for all the help and support that have shared with us over the years.

Adults are given the opportunity to embrace a method of religious education that will deepen one’s relationship with God.

Recent Updates from CGSUSA

Welcome to CGSUSA

We believe God and the child have a unique relationship with one another. Children need their own place to foster the growth of that relationship. The growth of this relationship is assisted by the adult, but is directed by the Spirit of God within the child.

What is the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd? The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd was born from the joy of the children’s encounter with God. It has been observed that children of the same developmental stage, even those from widely varying cultural backgrounds, respond to elements of the Christian message in the same way.

Connect to CGSUSA

We read in the Gospel of Mark that Jesus sent his disciples out in pairs, two by two; the journey was not meant to be a solitary one. It is essential for us as catechists to support one another as we prepare materials, work in the atrium, and observe the child. We come together in unity, as members of CGSUSA, to share the joy of this work.

Support CGSUSA

Through their joy, their wonder and awe, their capacity for love and prayer, and their radical simplicity, children offer us adults a glimpse of what it means to fall in love with God. This has been the work of CGSUSA for over 30 years: to advocate for the child’s joy.
