CGS and the Roman Missal, Third Edition

Assisting our catechists and formation leaders in preparing for the implementation of the Roman Missal, Third Edition.

Changes (corrected version) to the prayers for the Liturgy of Light celebration may be found here!

On November 27, 2011, the first Sunday of Advent, the Roman Catholic Church will implement the revised prayers from the new translation of the Roman Missal, Third Edition. There will be new faith language to guide our expression of the Mystery. Words to familiar prayers will be altered. Some hymns and chants will be sung differently. The Roman Missal will replace the name of the liturgical book, the Sacramentary. Why, though, the change? The revision to the English translation of the Mass adheres more closely to the original Latin and includes changes that more faithfully echo the liturgy’s scriptural roots. It includes additional prayers for newly-canonized saints and instructions for Masses to be said for special circumstances. The changes will affect Roman Catholics wherever English is used in the liturgy.

In this time of transition, our commitment to the child’s religious life prompts us to ask, “How will these changes affect the child? How may I best serve the child’s needs?” The National Association of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd formed a committee of staff and volunteer members to examine CGS materials in light of the new translation to determine the best way to implement these changes. The result is the Roman Missal & CGS Kits for Levels I, II and III.

Please note:  We have found a few items of printing errors and of clarification in the kits for Level I and for Level II.  You may read about these errata by following this link.

Each Kit contains a booklet and CD for the catechist with background information and details about the changes that need to be made the materials as they relate to the Mass. Each CD includes color pictures and instructions for updating these materials for the children.

Question: I recently subscribed to the Level I Online Materials Manual.  Do I need to purchase the Roman Missal, Third Edition & CGS, Level I as well?

Answer:  While the Online Materials Manual contains the changed text, it does not offer the catechist any background or reflection on the changes in the Roman Missal.  The Materials Manual does not provide any direction for the catechist to reflect and reconsider their album pages -- the Roman Missal, Third Edition & CGS provides material to assist in this.

Question:  I love the "Prayer to Accept Change" that appears in the Roman Missal, Third Edition & CGS Kit.  Is it possible to use that prayer with my catechists and reprint it in our parish bulletin?

Answer:  CGSUSA is grateful to Diana Macalintal for the use of this beautiful prayer.  Please contact her at the following URL to find out more about her work: http://teamrcia.com.
