CGS in the Episcopal Tradition
“The Episcopal diocese of Chicago entered into a covenant with the Roman Catholic archdiocese in 1985, shortly after I was ordained bishop. In the covenant we agreed to share resources and to collaborate wherever possible in areas of ministry, evangelization and service to the poor and needy. In a wonderful way, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has become one of the most important things we share, and therefore it is a very concrete and living sign of that covenant.”

CGS in the Episcopal Church
In 1985, a great surge of interest in the Catechesis began among members of the Episcopal Church. The ecumenical appeal and spread of the Catechesis pleased Cavalletti, who had a commitment to ecumenism and served as a member of the Ecumenical Commission for the Diocese of Rome. In 1997, she gathered catechists from around the world for retreat in Assisi, Italy. The theme was “The Word, The Eucharist and the Child.”  Retreat, attended by Roman Catholic and Episcopal catechists alike, surfaced a deep longing for unity, and a shared hope that the Catechesis might hasten its realization.
For over 35 years, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has been growing in the Episcopal Church around the country. There has been a constant Episcopal presence on the Board of Trustees and the Episcopal Committee, the CGSUSA staff and represented in the International Council. We also now regularly attend the Episcopal General Convention and the FORMA Conference.
